Index of Failed States This list from Foreign Policy Magazine sheds light countries whose governments have failed for a variety of reasons.

Recovery.gov is "a website that lets you, the taxpayer, figure out where the money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is going. There are going to be a few different ways to search for information. The money is being distributed by Federal agencies, and soon you'll be able to see where it's going -- to which states, to which congressional districts, even to which Federal contractors. As soon as we are able to, we'll display that information visually in maps, charts, and graphics."

A Magic Way to Make Billions - Synfuel boondoggle (Feb. 26, 2006) -- this Time Magazine article explains a scam of sorts relating to subsidies for synfuel. You might think synfuel is liquid or gas fuel derived from coal, but the subsidies reward practices such as simply spraying coal with diesel fuel prior to burning at electric plants.

Policies Focusing on Happiness and Well-Being

The American Human Development Project is a nonpartisan, non-profit initiative established to introduce to the United States a well-honed international approach and tool for measuring human well-being: the human development approach and the human development index. The project’s mission is to stimulate fact-based public debate about and political attention to human development issues in the United States and to empower people with an instrument to hold elected officials accountable for progress on issues we all care about: health, education and income.

Regulation of Toxic Substances

REACH is a new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law entered into force on 1 June 2007. Chemicals in Europe are more guilty until proven innocent, whereas in the US they are more innocent until proven guilty.
